Locum Offering - Trauma and Acute Care General Surgery, Vancouver General Hospital

The Vancouver General Hospital is an academic Level 1 trauma centre affiliated with the University of British Columbia which receives tertiary/quaternary referrals from across the province of British Columbia. The Section of Trauma Surgery staffs clinical teaching services for both Trauma Surgery and Acute Care General Surgery. 

Our group of 6 academic trauma surgeons is offering a limited locum placement effective July 1, 2022 for one year ending June 30, 2023 with the possibility of extension beyond June 2023 for a qualified candidate with fellowship training in trauma seeking to further consolidate career interests in research, education, global health and/or administration related to trauma and/or acute care surgery. The post will approximately 12 weeks of clinical trauma, at least three of which will be as the primary trauma surgeon of the week and the remainder as the secondary which includes 3 call nights and secondary paid activities including trauma clinic backup and fellow teaching. Additionally, there would be 5 or more weeks of Acute Care Surgery. Additional call or service coverage in trauma, ACS or at other sites could also supplement this income. There is also shared OR time for elective cases that could be available to the successful applicant. Expected income would range from a $200k to $250 per annum.

The ideal candidate could pursue an established research interest over the course of a one-year period for which he/she would apply for independent funding and have access to the current Trauma Services research infrastructure. The locum would also participate in all activities of the Section of Trauma Surgery including teaching at the medical student, resident and fellow level, quality assurance, and clinical care improvement activities such as practice guideline development. This is a unique opportunity for a qualified general surgeon with trauma sub-specialization to build academic professional experience through collaboration with an accomplished group of trauma surgeons in a major Canadian trauma centre. Licensure for the independent practice of general surgery in the province of BC is required.
